England's lost king: Is Richard 111 buried under a car park?

Tomorrow, the team at the University of Leicester will announce the verdict about whether the skeleton found buried under a council car park belongs to the lost king.

He remains for many historians the prime suspect in the death of his nephews - the Princes in the Tower. Shakespeare's play, which gave him notoriety, was fiction.

The team found a skeleton with a badly curved spine and head injuries consistent with recorded details of Richard's death in 1485. Richard's two-year reign signaled the end of the dynastic struggle known as the Wars of the Roses and is seen by some historians as the last act of the medieval era.

At the battle of Boswell, a powerful family swapped sides and backed the House of Lancaster against the House of York (Richard 111) The Stanley's, my husband's lineage, held back until they decided which side would be more advantageous to support. Thus ended the Plantagenet dynasty - making it one of the defining moments in English and Welsh history.

My husband is an ordinary man, born and raised in London during WW1. When I look at him, I see a noble heritage through his tall, slim form and fine hands. He was never meant to be a laborer, but a thinker—which he is. Those Stanley men, with their ability to reason, give me a cynical laugh. Politics is the same in any era.

Richard 111's death at Bosworth - the last English king to be killed in battle - ushered in the Tudor dynasty beginning with Henry VII. However, the royal lineage has been called into question with claims of illegitimacy. Not that we worry about that nowadays. People are who they are. But the royals claim to the throne is through lineage. And there lies another topic.

I read this headline earlier today, but didn't read the whole article. How fascinating is this discovery, especially if it really is the king's remains! So what does your husband think about it, since that's his homeland? I have always found the whole royalty lifestyle to be a bit like a fairy tale and wonder how those actually living it (most recently, William and Kate) endure the spotlight and lack of privacy. Thanks for an interesting post!

I read the headline online at lunch today - now that I'm home I've viewed the skull. The events that led to the discovery are amazing and it is fantastic that they were able to do a "almost certain" match through DNA testing-a technology unknown when I was born. Again, amazing!

I wonder if any of the royals have ever had a rightful claim to the throne. What a minefield!
