A woman has been burned alive in Papua New Guinea. Her crime: causing the death of a boy through witchcraft. The boy's relatives stripped and tied the twenty-year-old mother before dousing her with petrol. They threw her into a fire in front of hundreds of witnesses in Mount Hagen in the West Highlands. Outnumbered by the crowd, police and firefighters couldn't get through to save her and were chased away by onlookers.

In parts of the Pacific nation, deaths and mysterious illnesses are sometimes blamed on suspected sorcerers. Several reports have emerged in recent years of accused people, usually women, being killed. Deaths and mysterious illnesses are sometimes blamed on suspected sorcerers. Not only do people kill animals like the gentle giants - elephants and whales, or the intelligent porpoises and dolphins for their own purposes, they also kill defenseless women. Up until recently, hundreds of Indian brides were scalded, beaten to death or even burned alive if their dowries weren't adequate. When will humankind unite to achieve justice for the abused?

Stories of witchcraft survive from our past. In most instances, the accused women were herbalists curing the infirm.

From Wikipedia: 'Magic is the art of producing a desired effect or result through the use of incantation, ceremony, ritual, the casting of spells or various other techniques that presumably assure human control of supernatural agencies or the forces of nature. Magic has been practiced in many cultures, and utilizes ways of understanding, experiencing and influencing the world somewhat akin to those offered by religion, though it is sometimes regarded as more focused on achieving results than religious worship. Magic is often viewed with suspicion by the wider community, and is commonly practiced in isolation and secrecy.'

The woman's horrific death in Papua New Guinea bears no resemblance to the magic in Harry Potter. What attracts the dark side of the human spirit to magic?

Who knows what attracts us to magic Francene, but I think most of us are intrigued by it. The woman's death in Papua New Guinea is similar to what we used to do here 100s of years ago....horrific, but kind of explicable for a superstitious community...

I would guess what attracts us is the desire to uncover the mysteries of the unknown. It's the same thing that attracts many to the different religions

Whoa - that's horrid - I hate that things like this still go on - I don't call that magic or witchcraft - True magic is pure not evil - very sad :(
