African Elephants are avoiding humans, and with good reason. According to scientists, elephant poaching is once more increasing.

Reported by the BBC Nature News, when the wild animals leave their protected area in Serengeti National Park, they become stressed. More elephants also choose to live inside the park, suggesting they "know" which areas are safer to live in. The park helps protect animals from threats such as illegal hunting and habitat disturbance.

With no fences around protected areas in the Serengeti, animals and people may come and go, and elephants can enter into areas where they are at greater risk. However, elephants may have learned to link humans and vehicles with the hunting activity they see. Law enforcement within the park aims to reduce illegal meat and ivory poaching. Despite this, hunters still frequent the edges of the park and surrounding areas. Apparently, ivory is in greater demand.

"The elephant population in Africa is presently declining at an alarming rate," Dr Roskaft from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, said. "The world must find interest in it, if not there will be very few or no elephants in Africa in about five to six years."

King James Bible quote:
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Dominion: authority, power, control. Is this the way humankind interprets the scripture? How sad that humans are causing the decline of this intelligent creature with whom we share the earth.

I adore Elephants, It breaks my heart that 'Man' has been so selfish and shown them little respect over the years. Elephant poaching makes me physically sick, We are living in the 21 century - when will they do something about it? Something needs to give before these beautiful, magnificent creatures die out completely. *gets of soapbox*

Such beautiful, gentle creatures. I can't tell you the number of times I am disappointed with the human race and their treatment toward animals.

Sadly this world is full of greedy people who are prepared to pay for ivory...for the poor and starving in Africa, they can actually feed their families by doing this, so the problem will never stop whilst there is any dand...

Thank you for sharing this Francene, so sad to know that the elephants have an enemy worse than they would face in the wild, MAN. And the reason is not for survival, it is for greed. I pray that God protects the ones we still have and that something can be done to stop the slaughter of such a magnificent creature!
