While I earnestly desire peace for our planet, consider the wellbeing of every living creature, and promote a caring attitude between like-minded people, scientists have joined military personnel in a thrust to gain the advantage during a potential anticipated combat.

Killer robots could soon roam the skies, seeking the enemy during a future war. They would carry lethal weapons, and no human being would be involved in the decision-making process. See BBC News here. http://bbc.in/1019NIs

The era of drone wars is already upon us. Unmanned aircraft demonstrators like the arrow-head shaped X-47B can almost fly a mission by itself with no involvement of a ground-based pilot.  Also, missile systems like the Patriot can identify and engage targets automatically.

The era of robot wars could be fast approaching.  A laboratory at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta is already considering the jump to a fully-fledged armed robot warrior, a development with huge implications for future warfare.

How could humans even consider creating machines to release with the sole purpose of killing other human beings? They are planning for a future of war instead of peace.

While every decent person is deeply concerned with the welfare of other endangered creatures on the planet, others are planning to fight and kill a future unknown enemy.

Hi Francene,
Interesting!
I guess the introduction of drone/robotic weaponry is to reduce casualties of the operators, and reduce the element of bad decision making.
Of course like our cars or basic computers, if they go wrong the consequences could be nasty.

Planning for war is a necessary evil in the world - I wish that was not the case, but if we didn't prepare, we would be at the mercy of those that would happy walk in and dominate.
Cheers,
Gordon

Thank you for the amle perspective. Deep down, I know you talk sense, but I don't want to think we have to defend ourselves.

Very thought provoking X

This is such an important question and I think that The Great Gordino touches on a very relevant part. It's not that we want to prepare for war, it's the fear of not being prepared that drives this process.

I have a firm believe in s as human beings, but only as long as we have a chance to evolve into confident and loving people. Something that unfortunately is not everyones privilege.

Thank you for this, as Rebecca Mugridge phrases it, thought provoking post.

I know you're right about people developing at a different rate, but I don't want to think we have to act in an agressive way. I'm glad I don't make the decisions.

It's a bit of a scary thought actually!

Horrifying. I don't want to go in that direction.

I agree with the GGordino, that if we didn't prepare to defend ourselves we'd be overtaken by those with evil intent towards us. I'm thankful for the efforts that others take (and the sacrifices they make) to make it possible for me to live in a free country. It wouldn't be a free country if we weren't able to defend it. I found it fascinating when I studied with my children the stages that each culture throughout history goes through: first, it is primitive, but then as it grows and changes and becomes technologically advanced, the neighbors want what it has. So then it has to put up walls and defenses against the neighbors. We're in this walling-up stage, alas, and defending ourselves is very important if we don't want to be slaves of our "neighbors."

Much as I don't want to, I must agree with you. My following blog explains why.

Sadly, not every human being is decent, although I believe most are. But some are greedy, selfish, sadistic, power-hungry, and evil. We must be able to protect ourselves, and I hope that we can also work toward peace while defending ourselves.

We need to walk a fine line between defense and protection. Tomorrow's blog explains why I've learned this lesson to my cost.

One could wish for world peace all over and the end of wars forever but as the saying goes "wishes for horses and beggars would ride."

If only we could make our wishes a reality.
