With obesity rising in western society, studies have shown an increased risk of dementia. Piling on the pounds is not only bad for the body, but also for the mind.

Why are more and more people gaining weight?

1.       Abundance of food.

2.       Convenience food outlets.

3.       Ready cash.

4.       No necessity to work for survival.

5.       Food addiction.

Regular exercise and healthy weight are important for reducing the risk. But how can they change their eating habits? Boot camps give them an incentive to try, but they may sink back into old habits once they leave the protected environment.

Perhaps if slightly overweight people could work at something they care about, their mind would be otherwise occupied. Perhaps joining a charity, working with a local group of youngsters, community activity like keeping the parks clean or reading to children at the library would give another outlook on life.

Nobody can solve someone else's problem. Sometimes, an underlying problem exists—a need for love, low self-esteem, or an even deeper drive—like karma.

I read Edgar Cayce's books long ago and never forgot this little snippet of information the legendary seer dredged up from his deeper levels of consciousness. People who overeat may be reacting from a past life of starvation. This astounding fact makes you think.

"It's easy to say that the experiences in one's life are the result of past activities, but the forces of this law are greater than we may first imagine."

Theoretically, a child who dies of starvation in Africa could be reborn in an affluent society. Unable to control the urge for the food denied to them in their last life; they eat and eat—well past the point of sustaining themselves.

Perhaps if everyone gave this some consideration, they would be well on their way to mastering their future destiny. I can't think of anything worse than being trapped in a fat body with a deteriorating mind controlled by dementia. The cycle would go on in future lives until the person took control of their actions.

We are all masters of our own destiny. How we live determines the future, not only for ourselves, but for the rest of humanity.

Don't reach for that little treat.

I don't think it is fair to judge others eating habits. Some are deeply rooted psychological issues or as the result of other medical conditions or because like me ( prolly 3 stone over weight) We have had a major accident and been forbidden from physical activities or sports by their surgeon. I am not going to comment further for fear of loosing my rag !

I’m so sorry. I’m not judging and had no intention of offending anyone. My weight is a problem too, being disabled and finding walking difficult and painful. After reading this morning’s news article, I was addressing those who might not understand that obesity can affect their brain and lead to dementia. Please accept my apologies.

I can't see any problem in reaching for a little treat....why is having a little treat an issue?? Or are you someone who denies yourself everything?? And why the assumption that slightly overweight people are not doing anything they enjoy and you seem to say that because they are doing nothing worthwhile so they eat instead....wow some massive generalisations there...yep like the previous person I am going to shut up before I really start

Have you not ever considered metabolic rate? Like Katrina the inference that slightly overweight people just sit around and eat simply appals me. My MS means I am absolutely limited, it does not mean I stuff my face all day. I used to be a hugely successful sportswomen. Your blog post is absolutely offensive and I am speechless at how judgemental you are without any substantiating evidence or proof.

Please accept my deepest apologies for causing offence. That was not my intention.

That's an interesting theory. I guess it means if we all came together and worked towards eradicating world hunger, it will help future generations.

You're aboslutely right. If only people could work together for good.

Interesting take on what may have caused food issues. I know people who grew up poor (and stick thin) only to fight weight later when they had the resources to buy good food. I know some people who keep six months' worth of food in storage for the same reason. It's good to have regular reminders about the consequences of our daily choices. Thank you for this.

I guess we all have to find a balance between not enough and too much food.
